Newborn Session Q & A
What is a newborn session and how should we prepare for it? A newborn session is simply a lifestyle photo session performed in your own home within 5-14 days of birth. This session will have light, organic posing of baby and family and will document all those newborn details that we all love so much!
Why 5-14 days? When photographing a newborn, it's easiest to photograph when they are sleepy and able to be moved easily. The older they get, the less they have that sleepiness, making them more difficult to photograph.
What kind of photos are you taking? I like to take a lot of family photos, photos with each parent, siblings, etc. I also do individual shots, as well as detail shots.
But my home isn't pretty or styled? That's totally okay! Lifestyle photography is about showcasing YOU and your family. How special to be able to document the first days of your baby's life in the comfort of your own home and with the things that make your house feel like home! And if you're still concerned, I assure you the focus is always on baby and the family and less about what's in the background!
Is there anything we should do before you come? A bit of prep for your newborn session can make the session flow more smoothly and quickly while keeping baby happy. Here are a few things I recommend doing prior to my arrival to your session:
1) Depending on the amount of natural light in your home, we will likely be shooting very close to a large window. If there is furniture in front of all your windows, consider moving some that sit in the brightest windows prior to the session to provide better access for your session.
2) Heat up the house 1-2hrs in advance of your session. I like to say, "If your husband's not complaining, it's not warm enough." Babies just came out of a perfectly regulated 98 degree home and like to be warm and cozy!
3) Bathe your baby shortly before my arrival. Not only does this give them the fluffy newborn hair (if they aren't bald), it also keeps them alert and helps them settle in for a longer sleep during photos!
4) After bathing, feed and burp baby so they are content to sleep for a while.
5) Dress baby in the outfit you'd like them in for photos. If you want them in just a diaper, feel free to do that and just loosely swaddle them.
6) Having a pacifier on hand for soothing can make it easier to get the photos you want! If you absolutely do not want to use a pacifier for the short session time, we can make it work.
I'm so excited to capture these early moments with your family! I hope this post answers any questions you have concerning your newborn session. If you have further questions, don't hesitate to reach out via email at samantha@lynnandlayne.com.
